What is the SR 9 Corridor Planning Study (CPS)?
It is a planning study that assessed current and future transportation needs along a 30 mile stretch of the SR 9 corridor. A corridor planning study is the first step in creating a long-term vision for a corridor. The final corridor planning study contains a list of potential safety and mobility recommendations for the corridor that are incorporated into WSDOT’s Highway System Plan (HSP); local agencies’ comprehensive plans and regional planning documents such as the Puget Sound Regional Council’s Vision 2040. Most importantly, the HSP is the document where local needs are balanced with statewide transportation priorities and guides the legislature on where funding can be invested in the statewide transportation system.
Why did WSDOT study SR 9?
Between 2005 and 2013, WSDOT will have spent more than $300 million to enhance safety and reduce congestion on SR 9. However, we still needed to identify potential gaps not addressed by our current construction. The SR 9 CPS helps fill in those gaps by providing recommendations to address existing and future transportation needs for this increasingly important alternative to the I-5 corridor.
Identified projects that can help to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions along the corridor.
Recommended transportation investments and operational strategies that would benefit drivers, transit, pedestrians, and bicyclists that travel through the corridor. Identified intersection improvements that would redice delay and enhance traffic flow.
Partnerships & Cooperation
This study represents a shared plan between WSDOT and local partners to address safety and mobility issues on SR 9. The recommendations were developed by WSDOT, and a corridor working group (CWG) comprised of Snohomish County, Community Transit, PSRC, and the cities of Arlington, Lake Stevens, Marysville, and Snohomish. The reccomendations are based on technical analysis and input from commuters, recreational users, and local residents.
