2006, Sept. 07 - Crews lower sections of the new concrete box culvert into place.  When complete, the new SR 9 roadway will run over the top of the culvert.

2006, Sept. 07 - The Bone Creek culvert is nearly complete.  Crews are lowering the top concrete panels into place.  The culvert will also help improve drainage.

2006, Aug. 31 - You're looking north along a brand new stretch of Highway 9 from East Badger Road.  The new section of highway helps straighten the highway.  Drivers will no longer have to slow down for three 90-degree turns once they are shifted onto this new section of highway.

Biologists remove fish from local creeks during construction.
2006, Aug. 04 - Biologists use nets to help catch and protect aquatic animals from construction.  Fish and other aquatic life are moved away from the construction project.

2006, Aug. 04 - Biologists use special equipment to temporarily shock fish and catch them.  We can then relocate the fish to another area in the stream, away from construction.
Semi trailer flips and looses load of lumber in construction zone.
2006, July 13 - This truck's trailer overturned along Highway 9 and spilled lumber across the road, blocking the highway for several hours.

Lumber spilled across the road.
2006, July 13 -  Before we widened and straightened this section of Highway 9, this kind of accident was common. Truck collisions routinely closed the highway, causing delays and congestion.  The new, wider highway should help prevent truck collisions and improve safety.
Making Bone Creek fish friendly.
2006, July 11 - Crews restore Bone Creek to a more fish friendly creek.  They place large tree stumps with nice root wads in the bed of the stream to help create fish habitat.

2006, July 28 - Crews anchor and bury most of the tree stump to help ensure that they stay in place and create a nice fish habitat.

2006, Aug. 07 - Crews finished reconstructing Bone Creek and installing tree stumps.  The newly restored creek will help improve drainage and fish habitat.

Rebuilding East Badger Road.
2006, Aug. 08 - Crews rip out old asphalt and completely rebuild the roadway on East Badger Road.  The goal is to widen the highway and shoulders, and to strengthen the road bed to improve safety and help keep the road open during harsh winter weather.

2006, July 06 - Crews lay new asphalt north of East Badger Road for the new alignment of Highway 9.

2006, June 22 - Once the culvert is in place and tied together, crews then line the bed of the culvert with dirt and rock to help create a nice stream bed.

Prior to Construction

We will remove three 90-degree turns from SR 9 with our new alignment of the highway.
March 2006 - We will remove three 90-degree turns from SR 9 with our new alignment of the highway.  When construction is complete, SR 9 will no longer make a sharp left onto Garrison Road (as shown in the picture), but rather continue straight along Badger Road and then eventually sweeping left up towards Easterbrook Road and the city of Sumas.
We will pave, widen, and extend Sumas Avenue southwest to connect into the new alignment of SR 9.
March 2006 - Looking south across SR 547, down Sumas Avenue.  We will pave, widen, and extend Sumas Avenue to the southwest to connect it with the new alignment of SR 9.

The new alignment of SR 9 will connect up with Easterbrook Road near Morgan Road.
March 2006 - You're looking south from Easterbrook Road at Morgan Road. The new alignment of SR 9 will sweep north from Badger Road, through the green field in the picture, and eventually connect up with Easterbrook Road.

March 2006 - You're looking north, up Easterbrook Road.  The new alignment of SR 9 will connect into Easterbrook Road and will continue north to Sumas.

SR 9, in many places, has little or no shoulders.
March 2006 - In many places along SR 9 there are little or no shoulders.  We're going to widen SR 9 and build new four-foot and eight-foot wide shoulders to improve safety.

Prior to construction - SR 9 at the intersection of Front Street and Cherry Street is a four-way stop.
March 2006 - You're looking north up Cherry Street in Sumas. SR 9 at the intersection of Front Street and Cherry Street in Sumas is a four-way stop.  After construction drivers traveling on SR 9 will no longer have to stop at this intersection.  Only drivers on Front Street will have to stop.
