SR 9 Martin Rd. To Thunder Creek Realignment and Widening

Status

November 2009

  • The new, straighter section of SR 9 is open to traffic.
  • Crews have a few remaining things to finish up before the project is complete: striping, rumble strips, planting, and a few other tasks.

Overview
We will straighten the road and widen the lanes and shoulders to improve safety between Martin Road and Thunder Creek. We will also improve the Martin Road intersection at SR 9. Burlington Northern Railroad will build a new railroad crossing with a warning signal as part of project.

Why is WSDOT widening lanes and straightening the road?
The highway is narrow and has sharp curves. It also has a history of cars driving off the road in this area. The sharp curve just north of the railroad crossing is one particularly bad spot.

The End Result
With a straighter, wider roadway and improved intersections at the railroad crossing and Martin Road, there should be fewer collisions and injuries.

Project Benefits

  • Railroad crossing - BNSF will build a new railroad crossing to help improve safety.
  • Wider - We will widen both the lanes and shoulders of the highway to provide more room for drivers.
  • Straighter - We will straighten parts of the highway to making it easier for drivers to use the road and turn on and off the highway.

What is the project timeline?

  • Nov. 3, 2008 - advertise project to contractors
  • Dec. 15 - award contract. Marshbank Construction submitted the lowest bid - $1.68 million.
