Why is WSDOT installing a signal to improve the SR 9/32nd Street S.E. intersection near Lake Stevens and building a roundabout at the SR 9/84th Street N.E. intersection near Marysville?
We will build a new traffic signal at the SR 9/32nd Street S.E. intersection to help improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of serious collisions. About 19,000 vehicles use this stretch of SR 9 each day. The SR 9/32nd Street S.E. intersection was the site of 18 collisions from 2006 to 2010, including one serious injury collision. There were three rear-end collisions and four collisions involving drivers entering SR 9 from 32nd Street S.E. 

We will build a roundabout at the SR 9/84th Street N.E.(Getchell Road) intersection near Marysville to help improve traffic flow as part of our long-term plans to continue improving the SR 9 corridor through widening, intersection improvements, divided medians and other enhancements. More information is available on the SR 9 corridor program website.

Between 2015 and 2035, we estimate that traffic volumes going through the SR 9/84th Street N.E. intersection from every direction will increase by 48 percent, from 45,500 vehicles to 67,600 daily.  

Roundabouts also help reduce collisions. The SR 9/84th Street Northeast intersection was the site of 43 collisions between 2007 and 2012.

The End Result
Drivers will benefit from a smoother flow of traffic on SR 9 at 84th Street Northeast and 32nd Street Southeast. Targeted improvements such as roundabouts and signals can reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and enhance safety.

Roundabouts are also designed to reduce the risk of all collisions, especially those involving drivers turning across traffic. Project Benefits
These targeted improvements will improve traffic flow and safety along the corridor as Snohomish County's population continues to grow and more drivers use SR 9. 

What is the project timeline?

  • April 24, 2013 - Open house and limited access hearing held.
  • Nov. 18, 2013 - The project was advertised for competitive bid.
  • Feb. 26, 2014 - The project was awarded to Rodarte Construction.
  • Spring 2014 - Construction is scheduled to begin.
  • Nov. 21, 2014 - The project was declared operationally complete. Operationally complete means the majority of work is finished and the roadway is open to traffic.

Project signage will reflect the cost of construction engineering, project bid award and sales tax.

The approved budget for the SR 9/84th Street N.E. roundabout is $14.6 million. However, the current cost to complete the roundabout is $6.75 million, funded through the 2005 Gas Tax (TPA). The savings of $7.85 million will be released to the SR 9 corridor program to be available for another corridor improvement project. The signal at 32nd Street Southeast is funded through $2.2 million in Pre-Existing Funds (PEF)
