Project Facts
- This project is located north of Arlington at the SR 9 and 268th Street NE intersection, also called the Stanwood-Bryant Road and Grandview Road intersection.
- We will improve sight distance for drivers accessing SR 9 from 268th by filling in a dip.
- We will improve water quality in the area by constructing a detention pond.
March 2007
• This project, located north of Arlington, will enhance safety and reduce frustrating traffic delays.
• This project is now part of a larger project,
Schloman Road to 268th NE.
• Drivers can learn more about a recent
SR 9 Safety Study (pdf 1mb).
Overview
We will construct left-turn lanes on State Route 9 at the 268th Street intersection in Bryant, install guardrail, build a retaining wall and fill in a dip in the road.
Why is WSDOT
improving the intersection at SR 9 and 268th Street?
Left-turning motorists stop the flow of through traffic on Highway 9 at this busy intersection. Cars waiting to turn left increase the risk of rear-end collisions, cause frustration for drivers going straight and create congestion. A new left-turn lane will help solve these problems.
A large dip in the road on SR 9 also makes it difficult for drivers accessing SR 9 from 268th Street to select an appropriate gap in traffic. Leveling out the dip will help solve this problem.
The End Result
When this project is finished, traffic in the area will flow more smoothly, drivers will be able to see better and make safer left turns onto 268th Street.
Project Benefits
• Safety. New left-turn lanes will reduce rear-end and sideswipe collisions by giving left-turning motorists their own lane, removing them from the path of through traffic. Filling in a dip to give motorists better sight distance will better allow drivers to see traffic conditions ahead, making the road safer.
• Reduced Congestion. Separating motorists needing to turn left and right from mainline traffic will help keep traffic moving.
• Environment. We will build a detention pond to hold and filter highway storm water runoff before it is released into area waterways
What is the project timeline?
• January 2007 - We will advertise for competitive bidding for construction.
• Spring 2007 - We plan to start construction.
• Fall 2009 - We expect to complete construction.
Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. We hosted two community meetings in November 2002 and November 2003 to discuss improving safety at the SR 9/268th Street NE intersection.
Your comments are appreciated and taken into consideration. Many public suggestions have been included in the project design, including keeping the 269th Place NE intersection and installing flashing lights warning about the upcoming intersection (installed winter 2004). The solar-powered, red-flashing lights were installed east and west of the intersection on SR 9.
Feel free to contact the Corridor Project Manager Dawn McIntosh, at 206.440.4957 with your questions, comments or concerns.
Environmental Protection
WSDOT has tested the soil and groundwater in the vicinity of the Bryant Store and Gas Station to determine the extent of the contamination from the Gas Station. Contaminated soil that is encountered during construction will be hauled off-site and properly disposed of.
We will build a detention pond to hold and filter highway storm water runoff before it is released into the area waterways.
Please visit the WSDOT Environmental
Services Web site for more information.
Increasing safety is one of our priorities
A new left-turn lane and wider shoulders will be provided in the project area. Left-turn lanes significantly decrease rear-end collisions and improve safety for all motorists using the roadway.
We will also align the east and west legs of the intersection, control access to the Bryant store and Snohomish County parking lot, relocate a residential driveway from the southwest corner of the intersection to the crest of the Stanwood-Bryant Road hill.
Will this project impact tribal resources?
Section 106 consultation was initiated in March 2003 with the Tulalip, Swinomish, Stillaguamish, Samish, and Kikiallus Tribes. A Cultural Resource Survey was prepared and sent to the Tribes for their comment and review in September 2003. Coordination with all interested Tribes will continue throughout the design and construction of all projects on SR 9.
To learn more about Section 106 Tribal Consultation (also called government-to-government tribal consultation process) please visit WSDOT's Tribal Liaison page, where you'll find the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan and WSDOT's Tribal Consultation Policy (Adopted by the Transportation Commission on February 19, 2003).
