A September 2008 collision near the Marsh Rd intersection is a good reminder to drivers to slow down and stay alert through construction zones.

west side of SR 9
Crews expect to begin paving the newly-widened west side of SR 9 by Nov. 10. We will not open the new roadway to traffic until next year. In the meantime we'll widen the intersections at Marsh and Broadway and add traffic signals.

Crews grind up asphalt
Crews are reusing the asphalt that they grind up from the highway as fill for other parts of the project.

Traffic on newly-widened SR 9
Drivers are now using the newly-widened east side of SR 9. On the other side of the barrier crews are grinding up the existing pavement to prepare for widening work on the west side of the highway.

Extending culverts
Crews extended two culverts to the east to accommodate the newly-widened section of SR 9.

Crews work to relocate a stream along the eastbound side of SR 9 to make room for a widened roadway.

Stumps, logs, and roots line the new streambed to provide protection for fish and aquatic wildlife. This woody debris will create shade from direct sunlight and will form pools of slow-moving current where fish and aquatic animals can rest.

In July, crews began paving new lanes on the east side of SR 9. When complete, drivers will benefit from a four-lane highway, compared to the current two-lane congested roadway.

Crews pave the second lift of asphalt on the newly constructed roadway.

Before constructionLookng East from SR 9
SR 9 runs through farmlands and rural communities, but the highway has also become an important commuter alternative to I-5. To reduce congestion, we will widen the road to four lanes between SR 96 and Marsh Road.

The intersection of SR 9 and Marsh Road is one of four intersections that we will widen to improve safety and reduce congestion along SR 9.
