Overview
Winter weather is harsh on State Route 542, Mt. Baker Highway. The highway deteriorating and needed improvvement.
SR 542 was repaved and new drainage was installed from just east of Wells Creek Road to the end of the highway, near the Mt. Baker Ski Lodge.
 | Improves Safety
This project increase safety along 15 miles of State Route 542. The new, lowered centerline with pavement makers will provide better visibility for motorists, and pavement that had settled and deteriorated was replaced to create a smooth ride for motorists

 | Protects Environment
Six culverts were upgraded to improve fish passage. Two log snow sheds were constructed near Heather Meadows (Mt. Baker Ski Lodge) to improve drainage from snow melt in the spring time. And, we installed 81storm drains along the highway.

Partnerships & Cooperation
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.

Section 106 consultation was initiated with the Nooksack, Lummi, and Marietta Band of the Nooksack in July 2001. Follow-up phone calls were made to the federally recognized tribes. Consultation included conversations with the Natural Resource Departments of the Nooksack and Lummi as well as with the Cultural Resource Departments.
