Overview
We will replace the Gallup Creek bridge in Glacier with a longer, taller bridge to improve stream quality, fish habitat and safety for drivers.
Why is WSDOT
replacing the Gallup Creek bridge near the town of Glacier?
The Gallup Creek streambed has risen over the years, leaving less room for the creek to flow under the bridge. The creek washes down large boulders and debris, and it backs up at the bridge, creating a chokepoint. Two of the three bridge spans (under the bridge) are plugged with gravel. Each time the water level rises, there is an increased risk that the creek will flood across Mount Baker Highway and cause damage to the bridge and highway. We are precluded from digging out the streambed during low water levels. The best we can do during a storm is use a backhoe to make sure that debris isn't building up against the bridge and that the water continues to flow under the bridge. This is not the ideal way to maintain the bridge or creek. Right now it's a repetitive maintenance problem each fall and winter.
The End Result
Building a new, taller, longer bridge over Gallup Creek will help prevent the creek from flooding across the road. We will no longer have to dredge the creek, which is a bonus for us, the creek and fish habitat.
Project Benefits
The new bridge will:
- Be taller
- Be longer
- Reduce flooding
- Improve stream quality
- Improve fish habitat
- Improve safety for drivers
