February 2010
- Paving is completed. Crews will return in the spring to put the final coat of paint on the lane lines and finish installing reflective markers.
Overview
We will resurface 17 miles of Mount Baker Highway, from Britton Road (milepost 2.98) to Coal Creek Bridge (milepost 19.27). We will also resurface a half-mile of SR 9, from SR 542 (milepost 84) to Smith Creek Bridge (milepost 84.46).
We will repave the highway with a process known as Hot In-Place asphalt paving. The process recycles the existing asphalt. It involves a train of equipment that heats, loosens, removes, mixes, lays down and compacts the asphalt in one swoop.
Why is WSDOT
paving Mount Baker Highway?
The asphalt is getting old and worn out. In order to preserve the roadway and extend its lifespan, resurfacing is periodically necessary. Safety improvements will also be made to the roadway. These upgrades will include updating signs and guardrails, refreshing the lane lines, replacing raised pavement markers, and installing rumble strips.
The End Result
The roadway will be preserved for the future and the overall cost of future repairs will be reduced. The safety of the roadway will be increased.
Project Benefits
• Sustainability - Extend lifetime of the pavement and reduce overall cost
• Safety - We will make safety improvements to meet acceptable standards.
