The bridge deck on SR 532 at 84th Ave. has been worn through in numerous locations, creating a rough surface for drivers and exposing the bridge structure below. The road surface was very rough, and last winter, maintenance crews had to close lanes to fill potholes.
We helped to preserve the bridge, improved the driving surface and reduced maintenance-related lane closures, by removing a half-inch or more of the bridge deck; replacing and repairing worn expansion joints; and repaved the deck with 240 tons of a longer-lasting, rapid-set latex-modified concrete.
Schedule:
We closed the bridge from Friday night to Monday morning. The bridge was opened at 4:10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 17. View pictures of the project on Flickr.
Closures
- Crews closed all lanes of SR 532 from 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, between Pioneer Highway and 88th Avenue NW. Flaggers and police officers directed drivers around the closure on a detour route through Stanwood.
Some single-lane closures still remain.
- Crews will close a single lane from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 17 to restripe the bridge and nearby highway.
- Crews will close a single lane from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Aug. 23 through Aug 27, to wrap up miscellaneous tasks like striping and caulking.

The bridge deck is worn in both directions of SR 532.

In this picture, rebar from the bridge deck can be seen through the
previous overlay of asphalt. Last winter, crews had to close lanes on the
bridge to fix potholes like this.

A worn expansion joint can be seen in this picture.

Detour
SR 532 was closed between Pioneer Highway and 88th Ave. Flaggers and
police helped direct traffic during the closure.
WSDOT worked directly with the City of Stanwood, law enforcement and first responders to set up the best detour route.
Bridge facts
The SR 532 bridge was built in 1960 and carries 20,000 drivers daily over 84th Avenue and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks. It is a major link for drivers heading between Camano Island, Stanwood and the I-5 corridor.
Financial Information
This project is funded through the following sources:
