Project Facts
- More than 36,700 vehicles travel through this intersection every day.
- This intersection was ranked 25th out of 297 for needing a signal in 2002.
- This project will create 180 foot left turn only lanes on SR 527.
May 2008
- We must finish striping at this intersection before we can turn on the new signal. Crews are waiting for two warm, dry nights to complete this work. If the weather cooperates, crews will close one lane in either direction of SR 527 near 186th Pl SE Monday through Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Crews hope to wrap up the work by the end of April.

We will build a new signal at the intersection of 186th Pl SE and SR 527 in Mill Creek. We will also relocate business access across from 186th Pl SE, convert two-way left-turn lanes into left-turn-only lanes, build a bus stop on the west side of SR 527, and upgrade the street lights.
Why is WSDOT
building a signal at 186th Place SE?
This is a risky intersection for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. The business driveway is offset from 186th Place SE causing a hazard for drivers turning on to SR 527.
The new signal, driveway, and left-turn only lanes will work together to keep drivers safe and traffic moving. Additional lighting and crosswalks will help keep pedestrians and bicyclists safe.
The End Result
The business access will be realigned directly across from 186th Place SE and controlled by a new signal. Left turn only lanes will also be added on SR 527. Additionally, crews will build a new bus stop and upgrade lighting.
Project Benefits
- Safety - Realigning the business access, adding a new signal and left-turn only lanes will reduce the risk of collisions, especially head-on collisions. Pedestrians will benefit from new lighting.
What is the project timeline?
May 2007 - We awarded the contract to the most competitive bidder, Valley Electric Co. of Mt. Vernon, Inc. of Everett.
September 2007 - Construction began.
Spring 2008 - Crews need Mother Nature's cooperation to complete this project . They now hope to finish the work by the end of April 2008.
Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. Please contact Project Engineer John Chi if you have questions or concerns.
Environmental Protection
In our continuing efforts to protect the environment, the WSDOT team will work with surrounding cities and communities to protect, and in some cases, better environmental conditions in the area.
During construction, WSDOT will work to reduce impact to wetlands, creeks and rivers that could be in the project area.
Please visit the WSDOT Environmental
Services Web site for more information.
Increasing safety is one of our priorities
This project will help keep drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians safe. It will help to reduce collisions while adding illumination to the area.
During construction, WSDOT will implement all necessary traffic control and safety measures to ensure drivers and construction personnel stay safe.
Will this project impact tribal resources?
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
To learn more about the tribal consultation process please visit WSDOT's Tribal Liaison page, where you'll find links to WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan and WSDOT's Tribal Consultation Policy (Adopted by the Transportation Commission on February 19, 2003).
This project was determined to be exempt from Section 106 review per the Programmatic Agreement between Washington State Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and the State Historic Preservation Officer signed July 18, 2000. Programmatic Exempt letters were sent to the Tulalip, Snoqualmie, Samish, Yakama, and Snohomish Tribes on April 3, 2006. This completed our Section 106 efforts for this project.
