We widened State Route 525 from a two-lane highway to a four-lane divided highway to help increase traffic flow and safety, and decrease congestion.
We added sidewalks, bike lanes, improved lighting and drainage in the City of Mukilteo. We also built a new interchange at SR 525 and SR 99, which improved drive times and safety on both roadways.
Safety features include a raised center median, new sidewalks, new bike lanes and new street lighting. Doubling the number of driving lanes will reduce the likelihood of rear-end collisions.
The new lanes double roadway capacity, ease congestion, and reduce travel time on the highway.

We added better storage and treatment for storm water runoff, which will improve water quality and benefit salmon.
Partnerships & Cooperation
We set up the SR 525 corridor widening and safety improvements in different stages to reduce impacts to motorists and the surrounding community.
Contractor KLB Construction Inc. opened SR 525 between 106th Street and 121st Street to motorists in June 2003 and completed widening the west side of SR 525 between 121st Street Southwest and 132nd Street Southwest in July 2003.
WSDOT and KLB completed the final stage from 122nd Street Southwest to 132nd Street Southwest in October 2003. The final paving began in June 2004 and was completed summer 2004. Landscaping and other minor work continued through winter 2006.
WSDOT notified tribes with an interest in or land near this current construction project during the environmental assessment phase of this project. To learn more about Section 106 Tribal Consultation (also called government-to-government tribal consultation process) please visit WSDOT's Tribal Liaison page, where you'll find the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan and WSDOT's Tribal Consultation Policy (Adopted by the Transportation Commission on February 19, 2003).
