A portion of the North Creek Trail next to the UW Bothell/Cascadia campus will be closed from Monday, Oct. 13 to Friday, October 17.
Trail users will follow a signed detour.
The improvements will provide smoother, safer access to the UW Bothell/Cascadia CC entrance and help traffic flow on SR 522 in Bothell.

October 2008
- TRAIL ALERT: Crews will close the North Creek Trail just north of SR 522 on the UW Bothell/Cascadia Community College Campus to where it connects with the Sammamish River Trail from 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17 to widen the bridge above the trail during this time.
- DRIVER ALERT: Weather permitting, crews will close all lanes of westbound SR 522 between I-405 and Kaysner Way from Friday, Oct. 24 to Monday morning, Oct. 27. Drivers should be prepared for delays.
- During the Oct. 24 weekend closure crews will shift traffic onto new lanes.
- In an effort to reduce night noise, crews will use flaggers instead of back-up alarms on trucks when possible. Local residents can request earplugs.
WSDOT is working with the University of Washington and Cascadia Community College to build a new entrance to the south side of the Bothell campus. Our plans also include improvements to State Route 522 (Bothell Way NE) from the I-405 interchange to Kaysner Way in Bothell.
Why is WSDOT
building a new entrance to the UW Bothell/Cascadia Community College campus?
By Bothell city ordinance UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College must construct a south access to the campus from SR 522 in order to grow from 3,000 full time students to 10,000 full time students. In addition to relieving congestion at the north entrance and taking more vehicles off city streets, access to the south campus from I-405 and SR 522 eases transit ability to reach the north campus station, improving transit reliability.
The End Result
The project includes a new south entrance to the UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College campus on SR 522 with a signal and an exclusive exit lane to the campus at the southbound I-405 to westbound SR 522 off-ramp and a new bridge for the I-405 off-ramps constructed over the campus access street.

Project Benefits
Safety: smooths curve on eastbound SR 522, improves the weave at the I-405/ SR 522/ NE 195th Street merge, eliminates the short opposite-direction travel lane between Brackett's Landing and westbound SR 522.
Congestion relief: takes cars off city streets, eases congestion at the north Beardslee Boulevard entrance to the campus and provides transit with easier access to the north campus stop by reducing number of vehicles using that entrance.
Environment: WSDOT researched air quality, noise, water quality, traffic, and construction impacts and conducted a biological assessment.

Public Involvement
Our project team hosted a public meeting in January 2006 and answered questions about the project, affects to neighbors and commuters, and the project schedule.
In Jan. 2006, we also mailed a project flier (pdf 1314 kb) to 4000 residents and businesses around the campus.
The project office also held open houses in November 1998 and September 2000 and a community meeting with Brackett's Landing residents in June 2000. Comments from attendees resulted in revisions to the project design. If you need more information contact Design Engineer Hung Huynh.
Environmental Protection
WSDOT completed an Environmental Assessment which included analysis of air, noise, water quality, streams, rivers, wetlands, traffic and construction impacts and a biological assessment.The Federal Highway Administration approved a Finding of No Significant Impact on March 20, 2003.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
This project will increase safety by relieving congestion at the Beardslee Boulevard entrance to campus, smoothing the curve on eastbound SR 522 and eliminating the short opposite-direction travel lane between Brackett's Landing and westbound SR 522.
Will this project impact tribal resources?
WSDOT initiated Section 106 consultation with six Tribes, the Tulalip, Muckleshoot, Yakama, Snoqualmie, Duwamish, and Kikiallus, in July of 2000. Consultation continued in July 2001 with the same six Tribes and is still active and ongoing as this project proceeds.
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.
