SR 520 Program - Timeline

In March 2008, Gov. Gregoire announced an updated schedule to replace the SR 520 bridge and construct other improvements through the SR 520 corridor.  Each project has its own design and environmental process.

Timeline highlights of the SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program

  • 2009 - Begin innovative pontoon construction testing effort.
  • 2010 - Begin pontoon construction at existing facility.
  • 2010 - Begin construction of new casting basin in Grays Harbor.
  • 2010 - Begin construction on the Eastside (pending funding).
  • 2012 - Begin construction of new floating bridge.
  • 2014 - New floating bridge open to drivers.  

I-5 to Medina: Bridge Replacement and HOV Project

  • 2009 - Prepare supplemental draft environmental impact statement.
  • 2010 - Issue final environmental impact statement.
  • 2012 - Receive permits.
  • 2014 - New floating bridge open to drivers. 

Medina to SR 202: Eastside Transit and HOV Project

  • 2008 - Conduct environmental scoping.
  • 2009 - Issue environmental assessment.
  • 2010 - Complete environmental process.
  • 2010 - Receive permits.
  • 2010 - Begin construction (pending funding). 

Pontoon Construction Project

  • 2009 - Indentify preferred pontoon construction site.
  • 2009 - Public and agency scoping phase.
  • 2009 - Begin innovative pontoon construction testing.
  • 2010 - Publish draft environmental impact statement.
  • 2010 - Issue final environmental impact statement. 
  • 2010 - Receive Record of Decision from FHWA.
  • 2010 - Begin pontoon construction at existing site.
  • 2010 - Begin construction of new casting basin in Grays Harbor.
  • 2012 - Pontoon construction at new site begins.

Lake Washington Congestion Management Project

  • 2009 - Variable tolling environmental assessment - issued June 5.
  • 2010 - Variable tolling operational.
