The south end of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The viaduct is an important freight and commercial vehicle route. It connects the Duwamish industrial core to Ballard Interbay and North Seattle.
Once completed, the Stadium Station will increase pedestrian traffic in the SR 519 project area.
The Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program is composed of the Moving Forward projects, located in the north and south ends of the viaduct, and the central waterfront project.
The Moving Forward projects will repair or replace about half of the seismically vulnerable viaduct. They are necessary to improve public safety and keep traffic moving no matter what replaces the viaduct's central waterfront section. The Moving Forward projects are:
The central waterfront project will be decided through a collaborative process managed by the State of Washington, King County, and the City of Seattle.
WSDOT is managing the SR 519 project and Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program together to better coordinate construction timing, scheduling and design decisions. By completing the SR 519 project earlier, traffic will move with greater ease during south end viaduct construction.
The new Stadium Station for Link light rail is scheduled to open in 2009. Many light rail users will travel to the stadiums and other local destinations using the SR 519 corridor. As such, the project team is designing Phase 2 with pedestrians in mind.
