Trail workers

Building a trail is precise work. The retaining walls must line up and the ground must be level.

Overview

This project created a multi-use trail on Beacon Hill through the area once termed "The Jungle". The 3/4 mile trail extends from Jose Rizal Bridge, west along the south side of I-90 and then south along I-5 to the South Holgate Bridge. The new trail provides connections between Beacon Hill and downtown Seattle and the International District via 12th Avenue South, and to the SODO district, sports stadiums, and the waterfront via South Holgate Street. Features of the trail include:

    • 12 feet wide paved and level surface for walking, biking, and running
    • Fencing along both sides of the trail to keep children and pets from wandering into the brush.
    • More than (40) 25’ tall street lights every 160 feet

Work along the project area cleared and removed the overgrown blackberry bushes, weeds, and invasive plants which were choking out the natural landscape that includes numerous mature fruit trees. Additional landscaping was completed to finish the trail including planting of native plants and grasses.

This project is one of seven small missing links that completes the Mountains-to-Sound Trail which is managed by the Seattle Department of Transportation. The Mountains-to-Sound Trail is part of the larger Mountains-to-Sound Greenway effort that has helped create 100 miles of trail along I-90 from Central Washington to Seattle, focusing on preserving open spaces and wildlife habitat.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
The new fencing will prevent trail users and their pets from wandering off the trail and into dangerously sloped and unstable areas. New lighting will give nighttime trail users better visibility.
Leaf Glyph Protects Environment
The wider, paved trail will allow for better drainage from the hillside. A multi-use trail will also encourage more recreational users and bicycle commuters.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT worked with the Seattle Department of Transportation to complete this project.
