SR 503 - 4th Plain/ SR 500 Intersection - Add right turn lane

Status

May 2012

  • The new turn lane was open to traffic in September.
  • WSDOT awarded this project June 28 to Kerr Contractors Inc. of Woodburn, Ore.

Overview
This project improves the SR 503/SR 500 intersection at Fourth Plain Road. Crews added a right turn lane from southbound SR 503 to westbound Fourth Plain, easing congestion and improving safety for motorists and pedestrians.

Crews also installed median curb SR 503 between Fourth Plain and NE 65th Street to help reduce traffic conflicts from vehicles turning across multiple lanes of traffic between two closely spaced intersections.

Why is WSDOT making these improvements?
This intersection is consistently busy and often congested during peak traffic hours. Backups on southbound SR 503 prevent motorists from turning onto westbound Fourth Plain. Constructing a new turn lane allows motorists to make a right turn while through traffic is stopped at the intersection.

The End Result
Fewer collisions and better traffic flow at the intersection at SR 503/SR 500 and Fourth Plain Road.

Project Benefits

  • Safety: Improves safety by reducing rear-end type collisions on southbound SR 503 and sideswipe-type collisions on Fourth Plain Road.
  • Congestion Relief: Decreases congestion by adding a right turn lane from southbound SR 503 to Fourth Plain Road. The turn lane will allow motorists to make a right turn while through traffic is stopped at the intersection.

What is the project timeline?

  • Fall 2008: Preliminary design began.
  • August 2011: Construction scheduled to begin.
  • Early 2012: Construction expected to be complete.
