February 2012
- We plan to build this project in two phases:
- Phase 1 is scheduled to begin in 2012, and includes wetland mitigation, stormwater treatment, and some utility installation.
- Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in 2013, and includes widening SR 502, intersection improvements and median barrier.
- The Right-of-Way Acquisition process is under way.
Overview
This project widens State Route 502 from two to four lanes from I-5 east into the City of Battle Ground. Median barrier will also be installed to help reduce the severity of collisions along the corridor.
Additionally, crews will construct 10-foot-wide shoulders for pedestrians and bicyclists along both sides of SR 502 for the entire length of the corridor.
Sidewalks and bike lanes will be built in the commercially zoned area near Dollars Corner, located at the intersection of SR 502 and NE 72nd Avenue.

Why is WSDOT
widening State Route 502 in this area?
Local and regional growth demands on this corridor are putting pressure on local roads. Highway improvements are needed to increase capacity and reduce the risk of collisions on this corridor.
The End Result
Safer, faster trips on SR 502 between I-5 and Battle Ground. The highway will be four lanes wide with median barrier and 10-foot shoulders for bicycle and pedestrian travel. Improvements to the intersections at NE 29th, NE 50th, NE 72nd and NE 92nd avenues will improve traffic flow and increase safety on SR 502 and adjacent roadways.
Project Benefits
- Congestion Relief: Improves mobility and provides better access from I-5 to the city of Battle Ground.
- Safety: Helps improve safety along the SR 502 corridor by adding two additional lanes, and by controlling access onto and off of the highway. Median barrier will be installed to help reduce the severity of collisions.
