I-5 - SR 502 - Interchange

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending March 2006

Project Title & Location
I-5 / SR 502 Interchange

Project Description
This new interchange, connecting I-5 to State Route 502, will reduce congestion, improve safety and provide more direct access from Interstate 5 to north Clark County and Battle Ground.

Contractor/Consultant
Project is not yet advertised or awarded.

Recent Progress
This project is in the Preliminary Engineering and Right of Way acquisition phase.  The FONSI was issued in October 2005.  The geotechnical report was completed in December 2005.  The hydraulics report is currently in review.  WSDOT has submitted applications for federal, state, and local environmental permits.

Design Construction Impacts
The geotechnical report identified high moisture content in the native soils which makes it unsuitable as subgrade without improvment.  Alternatives currently being analyzed include overexcavation and replacement with borrow material and cement modification.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
This project will receive an individual permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers.  Approximately 20 acres of new wetland will be created to mitigate the impacts of the project.

Impacts to Traffic
No impacts during design.  The construction of the bridge will require 8 nighttime closures of I-5 in order to places supergirders.  The construction of the fish passable culvert will require a 1 week closure of the Gee Creek Rest Area.
