Design Construction Impacts
Due to high water tables in some areas of the project, aeration has been and will be required in order to achieve specified compaction. Some areas of unsuitable subgrade material have been discovered (underground springs, organic soil) which will require overexcavation and backfill with more suitable material.
Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Approximately 20 acres of new wetland will be created to satisfy environmental permitting requirements for the project. A fish passage barrier will be replaced with a new culvert that is fish passable.
Impacts to Traffic
There have been daily single lane closure of the left lane of I-5 for the construction of bridge foundations in the median. The speed limit on I-5 will be lowered to 60mph for the duration of the project. The construction of the bridge will require up to 10 nighttime directional closures of I-5 in order to place supergirders. The construction of the fish passable culvert will require a 5 day closure of the Gee Creek Rest Area.
