Recent Progress
The Fall construction activities have been focused on structural earth walls, drainage, bridge superstructure, paving and the installation of erosion control features for the winter season. The project is on schedule for its 2009 completion date.
Design Construction Impacts
The interchange ramps are graded and paved with a base asphalt layer. The bridge girders will be installed in January 2008.
Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Approximately 20 acres of new wetland will be created to satisfy environmental permitting requirements for the project. A fish passage barrier will be replaced with a new culvert that is fish passable.
Impacts to Traffic
There have been daily single lane closures of the left lane of I-5 NB for the construction of bridge substructure in the median. An access road has been constructed in the median in order to eliminate all I-5 SB left lane closures. The speed limit on I-5 has been lowered to 60 mph for the duration of the project. The construction of the bridge will require up to 10 nighttime directional closures of I-5 in order to place supergirders. The construction of the fish passable culvert and ramp walls may require a 5 day closure of the Gee Creek Rest Area.
