Why is WSDOT resurfacing the roadway on State Route 501 between 26th Street and the end of the highway in Clark County?
Sections of the highway are showing signs of deterioration such as cracking and rutting. Crews will resurface the highway using hot oil chip seal. This work is needed now to preserve the road for the next several years.

What is a Chip Seal?
Chip sealing preserves the integrity and life of deteriorating roadway by applying a Bituminous Surface Treatment (BST) seal coat of oil and gravel (chips) to the existing pavement. Restoration is necessary before the underlying road structure is damaged, requiring a much more expensive rebuild.

What should people expect?

  • People who drive and bike this stretch of roadway will alternate through a single lane of the highway daily during daytime hours.
  • The speed limit through the area will be temporarily reduced from 55 mph to 35 mph.
  • During the chip seal process there will be loose gravel on roadway. As with any highway construction project, motorists should exercise caution driving through work zone.

The End Result
In addition to providing drivers a smoother ride, this project helps preserve the roadway extending its useful life.
