Additional signing helps improve safety on SR 4 at Svensen's Curve

This project improved safety on SR 4 at Svensen's Curve by installing pavement markings, additional signing and roadside traffic devices.

Originally, this project was designed to improve travel time for motorists by reconstructing two sharp curves along this section of highway. During design of the project, right of way and construction cost escalations led to a change in priorities for construction projects. With these changes, the design for this project was modified to include low-cost safety enhancements that will provide improved warning to motorists approaching Svensen's Curve.

Partnerships & Cooperation
Public involvement efforts for this project began in 1996.

On October 26, 2004, WSDOT met with the Wahkiakum County Commissioners to update them on the progress and direction of the project. Then, on December 23, 2004, WSDOT met again with the Wahkiakum County Commissioners to address the concerns of property owners and discuss potential impacts to the economic development of Wahkiakum County resulting from the realignment.

As part of the right of way acquisition process, WSDOT met with each individual property owner that would be affected by this project.

In October 2005, WSDOT sent a newsletter (903 kb pdf) to area residents and businesses updating them on the status of the project.

By 2006, right of way and construction costs escalated nationwide, resulting in less desire to reduce travel time on the curves due to the higher costs involved. The original proposal proved to be too costly for the travel time savings that would be gained from reconstructing the curves, thus the change in design.
