Why is WSDOT
Improving this intersection?
In the 2012 Washington State Transportation Budget, the Legislature included a proviso (pdf 159 kb) directing the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to identify and design a solution that will alleviate congestion at the SR 305 Suquamish Way intersection located in Kitsap County.
The purpose of the project is to improve mobility while maintaining or improving safety. The project will address issues related to the nearby park and ride lot, the concerns of bicyclists and pedestrians, local business access, residents, and other land users.
The End Result
Through coordination and cooperation between Kitsap Transit, the Suquamish Tribe, Kitsap County, bicycle groups and WSDOT, the final result of this project will be improvements to this intersection that will have something for everyone.
- A separated right turn lane from SR 305 to Suquamish Way will help to reduce congestion at this intersection.
- The existing bus stop will be relocated to a newly constructed island. The island will provide a refuge from traffic to help increase safety while loading and unloading passengers.
- When busses re-enters traffic from the island, the traffic signal will allow for what's called a queue jump. Queue jumps help busses more easily merge into traffic.
- Bicyclists and pedestrians will be provided routes through the project area including some sidewalks, wide shoulders, ADA compliant ramps, green pavement marking for conflict areas, and a bicycle refuge box at the intersection for northbound bicyclists.
- Stormwater from the project area will be treated to remove pollutants.
What is the project timeline?
Aug. 2012 - Data collection, stakeholder input and traffic analysis.
Dec. 2013 - Planning effort was complete.
Sept. 2014 - A coalition of WSDOT engineers, planners, local elected officials and area stakeholders concluded an effort to identify potential solutions and associated costs for intersection improvements.
Fall 2015 - Design complete.
Spring/Summer 2016 - Start of construction.

In 2012 the Legislature provided $750,000 from Federal and State sources for preliminary design engineering.
In 2015 Kitsap Transit obtained a grant of $2,319,000 for the construction of this project.
