Current work
The project team is currently finalizing design of the bridge. The construction contract advertises for bids in March 2010. Construction begins in summer 2010.

Roundabout on Manette side
At the request of the City of Bremerton, the intersection on the Manette side of the new bridge will be configured as a roundabout. More information on the frequently asked questions page. View a video of the proposed roundabout design.

Compass rose design on new bridge
The City of Bremerton has selected a compass rose design to be formed in the concrete of the new bridge. More information on the frequently asked questions page.

Weight restriction implemented on Manette Bridge

Why is WSDOT replacing the Manette Bridge?
The Manette Bridge, which was built in 1930, is structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Read WSDOT's summary of the current bridge condition.

In March 2008 the maximum allowable vehicle weight crossing the bridge was reduced as a result of findings from routine inspection of the bridge. Reducing the stress of heavy vehicles on the bridge extends its useful life and keeps it operational until the new one is constructed.

CONSTRUCTION PHASE -
The new bridge will be built immediately south of the existing bridge.  The existing bridge will remain open to traffic for most of the new bridge construction.  The bridge will be closed to motor vehicle traffic for up to three months while the outer spans of the new bridge are built.  It is expected that pedestrians will be able to use the existing bridge during this period.
There will be occasional short duration closures of the bridge to all traffic during the construction period.

The End Result
The new Manette Bridge will be a structure built to current codes and engineering standards and accommodates motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. This project will preserve the important connection across the Port Washington Narrows and improve mobility and safety in the Bremerton area.

Compare the future bridge to the existing.

Project Benefits
Improved structure. The new bridge will be designed and built to current engineering standards.

Safety. Wider shoulders and sidewalks enhance bicycle and pedestrian mobility.

What is the project timeline?
