Why is WSDOT studying State Route 302?

State Route (SR) 302 is an important east-west link for Key Peninsula communities to Gig Harbor as well as Tacoma and other parts of Washington. Economic development puts demands on the highway system creating concerns about safety and congestion.

To address these concerns, WSDOT is studying the SR 302 corridor from Key Peninsula Highway to SR 16. The study evaluates the environmental impacts of:

  • creating a new corridor, and
  • improving the existing corridor by providing improved mobility and enhanced safety.

The End Result
The end result is the development of a corridor plan that meets the transportation needs of the community and complies with Federal and State environmental laws.

Project Benefits
The SR 302 study determines the potential environmental impacts of future projects which will help alleviate congestion and improve safety of the traveling public.

What is the project timeline?
The first phase of the environmental study began in July 2007. WSDOT spent eight months collecting data, evaluating existing conditions and determining motorist travel patterns.

The next phase of the study is now under way. Information on public meetings, advisory committee activites and study progress is reported on this Web site.

Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. The opinions of community members and those who depend on the route are a fundamental part of the study process.

WSDOT keeps the public informed about the progress of the study through the local media, this project Web page, public open houses and stakeholder interviews.

As this study continues to develop, WSDOT will seek public input and engage in public discussion. Send us your comments.

Environmental Protection
WSDOT is committed to preserving the environment, and makes every effort to assess and minimize environmental impacts from our projects. A detailed analysis of environmental impacts will be completed in the environmental study process so that WSDOT decision makers will have a clear and balanced understanding of the environmental issues surrounding the project.

WSDOT works closely with federal and state agencies to ensure that all project-related impacts to the environment will be avoided, minimized or mitigated.

Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
SR 302 has a six-mile-long high accident corridor. The recommended improvements will improve safety and reduce traffic congestion.

Will this project impact tribal resources?
WSDOT addresses the concerns of tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan. All impacts to tribal resources are addressed through proper mitigation to avoid or minimize the impacts.
