Project Update
We are collecting information that is essential to understanding the historic and cultural resource impacts of the alternative options being considered for improving SR 302. At the conclusion of this work project funding for the SR 302 Corridor Study will end.
Permits for Right of Entry
If you live in the project area, you may have received a letter from WSDOT asking permission to enter your property. Staff are gathering data about historic and cultural resources. We anticipate beginning investigations before the end of this year. If you have any questions please contact Yvette Liufau or John Donahue.
Next Steps
As funding becomes available, the next steps are to finalize the discipline reports and compile the studies into draft and final EIS documents for public and agency review. The ultimate goal is to finalize these documents by considering both the environmental studies and the comments received to reach a well researched decision about a preferred alternative.
Would you like us to meet with your group?
We are interested in holding discussions with local groups and individuals as needed to describe the current work and the process involved. For more information, please contact the project manager .
More information about the study can be viewed by going to the Study Library and the Corridor Alternatives Web page.
Why is WSDOT
studying State Route 302?
SR 302 is an important east-west link for Key Peninsula communities to Gig Harbor as well as Tacoma and other parts of Washington. Economic development puts demands on the highway system creating concerns about safety and congestion.
To address these concerns, WSDOT is studying the SR 302 corridor from Key Peninsula Highway to SR 16. The study evaluates the environmental impacts of:
- creating a new corridor, and
- improving the existing corridor by providing improved mobility and enhanced safety.
The End Result
The end result of the environmental impact statement process will be a preferred alternative that meets the transportation needs and fulfills all federal and state environmental laws.
Project Benefits
The SR 302 Corridor Study EIS will determine the potential environmental impacts of future projects which will help alleviate congestion and improve the safety of the traveling public.
What is the project timeline?
2007 - WSDOT began evaluating existing conditions and studying traffic patterns
2008 - Preliminary environmental work was conducted, a travel model was developed for the study, and the first of two alternatives screening exercises occurred
2009 - A second alternatives screening exercise was conducted, notice of intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement was issued and WSDOT held an agency and public scoping comment period
2010 to 2012 - Conduct detailed environmental and engineering work to be included in the discipline reports, an important component of the environmental document
Financial Information
This project is funded through the following sources:
