Previous damage on this portion of SR 302 caused by erosion.

This portion of SR 302 has seen repeated damage due to erosion under the surface of the highway.

Status

May 2017

  • Due to additional erosion, WSDOT has changed the construction strategy for this project. Repairs will now require a partial realignment of the highway away from the water. The new conditions and subsequent repairs now require a 15 day around the clock closure to all traffic. The closure initially had been seven days. The pending 15 day closure has not been scheduled. WSDOT will give advance notice before the roadway closes to all traffic.
  • Until further notice, SR 302 near Victor has been reduced to a single-lane controlled by a traffic signal. The speed limit is reduced to 25 mph. These temporary measures will be in effect until crews begin a project to repair this section of highway.

Why is WSDOT removing two culverts under State Route 302 at milepost 4.5 in Mason County?

The culverts that run under this section of SR 302 are slowly moving downslope due to erosion. WSDOT will remove the two failing culverts and relocate a portion of the highway away from the water.

What can drivers expect?

The roadway is reduced to a single lane with an automated traffic signal.

Once construction begins, a full closure of SR 302 at milepost 4.5 will be required for 15 days. During the around the clock closure, traffic will follow a detour.

The End Result
The completed work will save money on frequent maintenance costs.

Project Benefits
Removing two failing culverts, strengthening the area below the highway and moving the roadway away from the adjacent slope will help preserve the integrity of the highway and save money on frequent maintenance costs.

What is the project timeline?

  • Summer 2016 - Project competitively bid. Project awarded to Active Construction, Inc.
  • Spring 2017 - Construction to occur.
