An Environmental Assessment was performed on the proposed SR 3 Belfair Bypass, which would provide a reliable high-speed route between Kitsap and Mason counties. Comments on the Environmental Assessment were accepted through March 31, 2013.
See the preliminary design in this aerial graphic (pdf 2.3 mb).
The assessment fulfills WSDOT’s obligation under the National Environmental Policy Act and State Environmental Policy Act to disclose project effects and mitigation.
A revised Environmental Assessment (pdf 6 mb) was issued June 2013.
Here are answers to questions (pdf 44 kb) posed by your neighbors about the Belfair Bypass.
A bypass would reduce congestion and improve safety through Belfair and provide an alternate route for emergency vehicles.
It will also serve as an alternate route in case of highway closures from collision or incidents on existing SR 3 in Belfair.
The completed project will provide a two-lane highway on a new alignment with a proposed speed limit of 60 mph that will move regional traffic from Shelton to Bremerton around Belfair.
It will ensure efficient movement of freight, commute trips between Kitsap and Mason counties, accommodate seasonal influxes of tourist traffic, and serve general traffic needs through to the design year 2035.
