SR 3 - Belfair Bypass - New Alignment

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending June 2007

Project Title & Location
SR 3 - Belfair Bypass - New Alignment

Project Description
The proposed Belfair Bypass solves both the immediate and long-range transportation safety and mobility needs of the SR 3 corridor in northeast Mason County.

Contractor/Consultant
Skillings-Connolly, Inc. Consulting Engineers

Recent Progress
The project office held a second open-house on April 25 to solicit additional public input and to announce Mason County’s connection alternative preference (S1). Staff displayed updated cost information and revised connection alternatives for the public to vote on.

The north connection alternative N4 was deleted due to a nonviable round-about location.

Transportation modeling showed the bypass does not fix SR 3 congestion for the next 20 years. Other roadway improvements adjacent to SR 3 are necessary such as a Newkirk Road extension or an SR 300 connection to SR 3.

An alternative selection is still targeted for the summer 2007.

Design project management plan and schedule under development.

Impacts to Traffic
This project, which constructs a new corridor, will bisect the Alta-Vista neighborhood. A system of frontage roads will be required to provide access. It is Mason County and WSDOT's goal to complete this new road before sewer and widening work in the Belfair Urban area begins.
