Recent Progress
This project widens SR 24 by adding one lane in each direction from I-82 to Riverside Road, improves the interchange, and constructs a new bridge over the Yakima River. The Contractor, Max J. Kuney, has finished the piers on the first stage of the I-82 interchange bridge. Eighty percent of the foundation work for the new Yakima River bridge is complete and work has started on the columns and cross beams. The Contractor began roadway work this quarter, and the first order of work was constructing a new city access street for the project, which is nearing completion.

Design Construction Impacts
This project is projected to overrun reimburseable utililty agreements by $150,000. The contract plans did not clearly define proposed utility locations and conflicts with work after relocations. This additional cost will be covered by current project funds.
Agreement work to be done for Yakima County has been delayed until next year because a local sewer district did not complete their pre-contract work as agreed. This delay has increased the cost of the agreement.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
All permits have been acquired for this project. This project will create approx. 0.5 acres of wetland and improve the stream crossing at Blue Slough.
All work is being performed in compliance with permit conditions.

Impacts to Traffic
As needed for construction access, a lane will be closed on I-82. The I-82 lane closure will cause back-ups during high traffic flows. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph between SR 24 and Riverside Road to I-82 for the life of the project. When needed, traffic on SR 24 will be controlled by flaggers. This will create delays up to five minutes and possible backups.
