SR 24 - I-82 to Keys Rd - Add Lanes - Open June 2007

Quarterly Project Report Update for Quarter Ending December 2007

Project Title & Location
SR 24 - I-82 to Keys Road - Additional Lanes - Yakima

Project Description
This project constructs one additional lane in each direction from I-82 to Riverside Road, improves the interchange, and constructs a new bridge over the Yakima River, relieving congestion, improving safety, and addressing erosion at the Yakima River Bridge piers.

Contractor/Consultant
Max J. Kuney of Spokane WA

Recent Progress
The project is complete, except for plantings required for environmental mitigation. The contractor will continue to care for all planting areas within the project for one year to ensure healthy plant establishment.

WSDOT hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 28, 2007 to celebrate the opening of the roadway to traffic. On May 2, 2007 WSDOT dedicated corridor revitalization art work on the project.  Additional art work was installed on the bridge over Interstate 82 in September.

Design Construction Impacts

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Due to recent listing of critical habitat for Mid-Columbia River Steelhead, additional coordination was necessary with the National Marine Fisheries Service prior to beginning 2007 in-water work. Concurrence was received allowing in-water work to begin without delay. A request for added time to the in-water work window through October 31 was approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The added time was needed to construct an adequate containment system for bridge demolition.
Field inspectors and region environmental staff will closely monitor demolition, and conduct water quality monitoring as needed

Impacts to Traffic
All remaining work is off the roadway, so no lane restrictions are required for the work. A lane may be closed as needed for construction access.
