SR 22 - I-82 to Toppenish - Safety Improvements

November 2009

  • WSDOT will advertise this project as two separate construction contracts. The first contract for extending irrigation culverts was advertised on October 12, 2009. The second contract for widening the roadway and constructing safety improvements will be advertised in March 2010.

This project improves safety by widening the roadway, flattening roadside slopes, providing guardrail upgrades, installing new sidewalks, and constructing intersection improvements along this two mile section of SR 22 between I-82 and Toppenish.

Why is WSDOT improving SR 22?
This two-lane highway between I-82 and Toppenish has narrow lanes and shoulders and experiences frequent collisions.

The End Result
These safety improvements will help reduce the number of collisions along this route and improve access for adjacent property owners.

Design on this safety improvement project began in 2007 and construction is scheduled for 2010.

This project is funded through the following sources*:

  • 2003 Nickel Funding Package - $5.3 million
  • Existing Funds - $0.1 million
  • Total Funding Available from all sources - $5.4 million

*As approved in the 2009 Transportation Budget.
