This project included construction of a replacement ferry boat with associated vehicle loading terminals. The previous vessel, the Martha S., had been in service on this route since 1948. Replacement parts were no longer being commercially manufactured and had to be custom-made as needed. The vessel had a limited capacity, especially when large trucks were on board.
The new vessel, M/V Sanpoil, meets all current US Coast Guard safety regulations.
The Sanpoil can carry up to twice as many passenger vehicles per crossing.
| Economic Incentive
The Sanpoil is a modern vessel requiring fewer repairs, and reducing costs.
Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT partnered with the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation (CCT) in the funding of this project. CCT contributed $2 million toward the vessel construction cost.
