SR 203 - Corridor Safety Improvements - Snohomish County

We will upgrade over six miles of SR 203 We will upgrade more than six miles of SR 203 north of the King County line. View larger map.

Project Facts
  • This stretch of SR 203 carries an average of 13,000 vehicles each day.
  • From 2002 to 2006 there were nearly 350 collisions on SR 203, 120 of which resulted in injuries.
  • The most common collisions on this stretch of SR 203 are rear-end collisions.

Project Status

November 2008

  • WSDOT engineers are currently designing this project.
  • We expect to begin construction in spring 2009.

Overview
We will complete safety improvements to more than six miles of State Route 203 just north of the King County Line. These improvements include a new left-turn lane at N High Rock Road, new guardrail and shoulder rumble strips, updated signs, pavement markings and lighting.

Why is WSDOT completing safety improvements to SR 203?
Since 2002, there have been 348 collisions along this stretch of SR 203, and 120 of those collisions resulted in injuries. Completing improvements to this section of the highway will improve driver safety and reduce the likelihood of future collisions.

The End Result
We will complete intersection improvements and install new guardrail, shoulder rumble strips, pavement markings and signage to improve safety on SR 203.

Project Benefits
Safety - Shoulder rumble strips and guardrail will improve driver safety by reducing the likelihood and potentail severity of run-off-the-road collisions. A new left-turn lane at the intersection of SR 203 and N High Rock Road will increase safety for drivers attempting to turn across oncoming traffic.

What is the project timeline?
This project is currently in design. We expect to start construction in spring 2009.

Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. Please contact Project Engineer Hung Huynh if you have questions or want more information about this project.

Environmental Protection
WSDOT makes every effort to assess and minimize environmental impacts from our projects. During project design, WSDOT will work to reduce the impacts to wetlands, creeks and streams in the project area. A detailed analysis of the project's environmental impacts will be completed and, if necessary an appropriate plan for mitigation of impacts will be developed and documented as part of the Environmental Documentation and Permitting process.

Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
Intersection improvements and new guardrail, shoulder rumble strips, pavement markings and signage will improve safety on SR 203.

Will this project impact tribal resources?
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.

To learn more about the tribal consultation process please visit WSDOT's Tribal Liaison page, where you'll find links to WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan and WSDOT's Tribal Consultation Policy (Adopted by the Transportation Commission on February 19, 2003).
