Drawing of the future roundabout planned for this intersection.
Project Facts
  • Constructs a one-lane modern roundabout to enhance safety and improve traffic flow.
  • The new roundabout will drastically reduce the risk of serious sideswipe or head-on collisions.
  • Construction is planned to begin in spring 2007 and will be complete by fall 2007.

Project Status

May 2008

  • Crews tried to complete the final paving on this project before winter weather and lower temperatures arrived.  We did not find long enough stretches of dry weather and mild temperatures to finish the paving without significantly affecting traffic.
  • Crews expect to resume paving the roundabout this month, as weather allows, during nighttime hours.

We are designing a one-lane, modern roundabout at the intersection of SR 202 and SR203 (Fall City Snoqualmie Road) near Fall City.

Why is WSDOT improving the SR 202 and SR 203 intersection over the Snoqualmie River?
Thirty-nine collisions occurred at the intersection of SR 202 and SR 203 between 1996 and 2001.  The roundabout on the north end of bridge at the junction of SR 203 will address this accident problem, projected to get worse as growth continues in the area.

A new roundabout will improve traffic flow through the intersection of SR 202 and SR 203. The roundabout will also enhance safety and help reduce congestion, particularly for drivers turning left.

The End Result
The current intersection will be replaced with a modern roundabout. The new roundabout will move traffic from several directions in and out of a one-way oval-shaped intersection.  Drivers will simply yield rather than stop at signs or wait for a traffic light.

Project Benefits
Safety: Drivers will have better visibility, reduced congestion and the ability to turn without risking a serious sideswipe or; head-on collision. Pedestrian safety will also improve with the addition of new sidewalks.

Congestion relief:   Drivers will no longer have to wait long periods to make a left turn at the intersection. They also will not have to wait for a traffic light.

Environment: WSDOT will upgrade the drain system that carries stormwater run off.

What is the project timeline?
We started construction in April 2007. The project will be complete by spring 2008.

Public Involvement
Your thoughts and opinions are important to us. Please contact Project Engineer Dave Lindberg at (425) 814-7104.

Environmental Protection
This project will affect the King County regulated 100-year flood plain. WSDOT will minimize the affect by limiting the amount of fill material used during construction. Flood plain mitigation will comply with the King County Developmental and Environmental Services Code. The drain system will also be upgraded.
Please visit the WSDOT Environmental Services Web site for more information.

Increasing safety is one of our priorities
Many studies show roundabouts are significantly safer than traffic signals. The number and severity of accidents is reduced considerably because people drive more slowly through a roundabout. In addition, drivers can no longer run a red light or turn left in front of oncoming cars. People in these types of accidents frequently suffer severe or fatal injuries.

Sidewalks enhance pedestrian safety in the area and improvements to the intersections will reduce accidents.

Will this project impact tribal resources?
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.

Section 106 consultation was initiated with the Snoqualmie, Tulalip, Yakama, Duwamish and Samish Tribes.  Follow up calls were made to each tribe to invite them to comment on the Cultural Resource Survey produced as part of the project.
