November 2017

  • WSDOT is working with the community on future safety improvements at the intersection of SR 20 and Banta Road just south of Deception Pass on Whidbey Island.
  • Construction on intersection safety improvements are scheduled to start in spring 2019.

This project will improve safety and help keep drivers moving through this area during peak congestion.

Why is WSDOT making safety improvements to this intersection?
During a five year stretch, between January 2011 and December 2015, there were 18 collisions at this intersection. Seven of these were injury crashes.

Naval Air Station Whidbey is expected to add up to 1,200 more service members to its base and turn the Banta Road gate into a 24-hour access point to accommodate additional personnel. The increase in staffing and change in access will add to the congestion and potential for more crashes at the intersection.

The End Result
When this project is finished it will improve safety and keep drivers moving as traffic volumes in this area increase.

Project Benefits
Improving this intersection will:

  • Reduce crashes.
  • Reduce the number of injury crashes, supporting Washington's strategic highway Target Zero plan.
  • Keep drivers moving as additional vehicles are added to the road in this area.

What is the project timeline?

  • Summer/fall 2017 - Solicit community feedback.
  • Fall 2017 to fall 2018 - Design work.
  • Winter 2018/2019 - Advertise project for competitive bidding.
  • Spring 2019 - Project begins.
  • Fall 2019 - Project complete.
