SR 20 - Rock Slide Ditch - Complete April 2006

Overview
A massive rock slide destroyed SR 20 east of Newhalem on November 9, 2003. The rock slide left the hillside above the highway extremely unstable and blocked access to the town of Diablo.

This project cut the hillside back from the highway and built a large rock catching ditch to protect the road and drivers.

Reduces the chance of motorists being hit by falling rocks or running into them on the roadway, and protects the road from damage.

Partnerships & Cooperation
Whatcom County was declared a disaster area by the governor in October 2003. The Federal Highway Administration later determined that the November 9 rock slide was a result of the heavy rains in October. Thus, WSDOT was able to access emergency funding from the federal government to repair the rock slide damage.
