Overview
This project made safety improvements to SR20 north of Oak Harbor. Added left turn lanes, lighting, passing lanes, guardrail and drainage systems. Utility poles and other roadside hazards were relocated.
Increased congestion on SR 20 led to a significant number of collisions in this area. This section of SR 20 is now safer and traffic delays have been reduced. Construction was completed August 2005.
 | Improves Safety
Specific safety improvements included: • A two-way left turn lane and lighting installed from the vicinity of NE Narrows Ave to Oak Harbor north city limits, • A traffic signal, lighting and left turn lanes installed at the Cemetery Road/NE 16 Ave intersection, • Northbound and southbound left turn lanes installed at the Sleeper Road intersection, • A right turn lane installed on the east leg of Sleeper Road, • Northbound and southbound left turn lanes and a northbound right turn lane installed at the Frostad Road intersection, • The lighting at Fakkema Road, Ault Field Road and Hoffman Road upgraded to improve motorist visibility, • A northbound acceleration lane installed from Regatta Drive to northbound State Route 20.

 | Relieves Congestion
SR 20 is now safer and traffic delays have been reduced. Passing and turning lanes help reduce congestion and the risk of run-off-the-road collisions.
|
 | Protects Environment
We designed this project to avoid and/or minimize impacts on existing wetlands and sensitive areas. A wetland mitigation site was built as part of this project. Trees and shrubs were planted at various locations.
Various permanent storm water treatment facilities were constructed to treat highway runoff. These treatment facilities include detention ponds, biofiltration swales, vegetative filter strips, and an infiltration trench.
