Overview
We made safety improvements to State Route 20 on Whidbey Island, including improving the Monkey Hill/SR 20 intersection, adding a right turn lane from southbound Monkey Hill Road to eastbound SR 20, widening the traffic lanes and shoulders, improving the Northgate Way/SR 20 intersection, and realigning the highway to improve sight lines for drivers.
 | Improves Safety
Realigned intersections and new turn lanes improve motorists' sight distance and safety. Clear zones, the area outside of the shoulders that has been cleared and leveled, allow cars room to run off the road in an emergency without hitting objects such as trees.
|
 | Protects Environment
This project installed various permanent storm water treatment facilities to treat highway runoff. These treatment facilities included detention ponds, biofiltration swales, vegetative filter strips, and an infiltration trench.
