SR 20 - Libbey Road to Sidney Street, Realignment and Widening - Complete November 2011

Overview
We rebuilt the Arnold Road intersection by realigning SR 20 in a way that allows for more sweeping curves, and by cutting back the hillside. The west leg of the Arnold Road intersection was realigned to improve the intersection angle. This makes it easier for drivers to see and turn on and off the highway.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
The realignment work improves sight distance which helps reduce the number of collisions at the Arnold Road intersection.

Additionally, the realignment and cross-slope work reduces the number of run-off-the-road type collisions along this section of highway.
Leaf Glyph Protects Environment
We will installed water quality treatment facilities to improve water quality by removing heavy metals and oil from highway runoff. The addition of a buried detention pipe  acts like a water detention pond and holds storm water, releasing it slowly to reduce the amount of water flowing on to nearby property.

Partnerships & Cooperation
This project was located within the boundary of the nation's only national historical reserve, Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve, which is managed by the National Park Service. We commissioned two separate reports that took into account the unique setting of this project. First, a Cultural Resource Survey evaluated the proposed project for issues concerning archaeological sites and/or historic properties. Second, a Cultural Landscape Assessment examined the project in terms of the landscape, setting, and components that compose it (the rural nature, farm fields, viewsheds, hedgerows, fence lines, and the like). The National Park Service, as well as a number of Tribes, visited the project site, reviewed and commented on project plans and reports, attended meetings, and were valued partners in designing this project.
