SR 18 - Weyerhaeuser Way to SR 167 Truck Climbing Lane - Complete October 2005

Overview
Added an uphill truck climbing lane on westbound State Route 18 between State Route 167 in Aurburn and Weyerhaeuser Way in Federal Way. The extra lane gives large trucks thier own lane going uphill and allows faster traffic to pass.

Opened the new lane on Oct. 12, 2005 with  new traffic cameras and traffic data counters, which provide real time traveler information about traffic congestion and incidents on this section of highway.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
New signals at westbound on and off ramps at Weyerhaeuser Way help reduce accident risk.
Car GlyphRelieves Congestion
The truck climbing lane reduces congestion and travel times on westbound SR 18. We also widened the existing Peasley Canyon overcrossing to accommodate the new lane and shoulder.
Leaf Glyph Protects Environment
We built features to store and treat highway stormwater runoff.

Partnerships & Cooperation
At WSDOT we seek to address the concerns of the tribal nations using the process outlined in Section 106 of The National Historic Preservation Act and the WSDOT Tribal Consultation Policy adopted in 2003 by the Transportation Commission as part of the WSDOT Centennial Accord Plan.  We invited the Tulalip and Muckleshoot Tribes to comment on this project. The project is exempt from Section 106 Tribal Consultation because the project is entirely state funded.
