Recent Progress
WSDOT is currently working with the resource agencies to gain concurrence on a preferred design alternative and mitigation plans prior to finalizing the Environmental Impact Statement.  Work plans are being developed to proceed on applicable design elements not in jeopardy of the EIS process.  Additionally, work to purchase priority parcels in the corridor continues.

Design Construction Impacts

The 2003 Transportation Funding Package provides design funds for Stage 1 and Stage 2, and funds roughly 1/7th of the right-of-way needed for the project.  Additional funding is required to complete real estate acquisition and for construction of the project.  With right-of-way fully funded by 2005 the first project would be ready for ad in November 2008.

Environmental Impacts / Compliance
Significant wetland impacts cannot be avoided and will be mitigated.  WSDOT is working with resource agencies to develop an innovative, natural approach to mitigating storm water by enhancing streams and stream buffers.

Impacts to Traffic
WSDOT anticipates some impacts to I-5 traffic in the vicinity of 70th Avenue East in Fife when a new interchange is constructed (2008 to 2011 if funding is available).  Mitigation efforts will include a comprehensive public awareness campaign.
