Sept. 29 - Oct. 3 Extended Weekend Lane Closure
At 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 crews will close the left lane of southbound SR 167 between 15th NW and SR 18 in Auburn. This will reduce southbound SR 167 from three lanes to two. The lane will remain closed around the clock until 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3.
During the closure crews will remove and rebuild a 4000 foot-long section of the left lane and shoulder between 15th NW and Main Street.
Construction Schedule
This schedule is our best estimate of the work planned during the weekend lane closures. Actual times could vary through the weekend.
9 a.m. Friday -- 3 a.m. Saturday
In this first phase crews will demolish and remove the existing asphalt pavement.
3 a.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday Once crews remove the pavement they'll excavate and remove the gravel roadbed underneath the pavement.
9 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday
In the third phase crews will grade (or level) and compact the ground (aka subgrade) that lies underneath the pavement and gravel roadbed.
10 a.m. Sunday to 10 p.m. Sunday -
Using dumptrucks and bulldozers crews will load and place roadbed gravel on top of the subgrade.
3 p.m. Sunday to 3 p.m. Monday
In this phase workers will level and compact a half foot layer of gravel in preparation for paving.
7 a.m. Monday to 5 a.m. TuesdayConstruction will conclude with crews paving a foot deep laver of asphalt along the 4000 foot-long section of the left lane and shoulder.
The rebuild work is needed because two years ago WSDOT added a third lane in this section of southbound SR 167 by restriping the freeway and shifting traffic to the east. The traffic shift pushed a portion of the left lane onto the left shoulder. But the shoulder wasn’t built to withstand the daily pounding of traffic and could fail soon. Rebuilding this section of freeway will make it more durable. The rebuild work also will widen the shoulders from four to 10 feet, which will create more room to safely and quickly clear collisions and stalled vehicles.
