SR 162 - SR 410 to S of 96th St E - Paving and ADA Compliance

February 2018

  • Crews are finishing the ADA improvements. The asphalt paving and striping are complete.
  • This project repaves a 4-mile section of SR 162, from SR 410 in Sumner south to 96th Street East. The project also makes bridge repairs and brings curb ramps and pedestrian push buttons at five intersections up to current ADA standards.
  • During construction, drivers can anticipate overnight lane closures each Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Pedestrians will follow signed temporary detours during ADA construction. Overnight ramp closures will be implemented for the bridge work.

Why is WSDOT repaving State Route 162 and updating sidewalk ramps and pedestrian push buttons at signals between SR 410 and 96th Street near Sumner?
This section of SR 162 has cracks and ruts in many places that can lead to potholes. The project will extend the life of the highway and provide a smoother ride for the approximate 20,000 vehicles that travel through this area every day.

The ADA work involves smoothing out concrete curbs and sidewalks, and updating the push buttons at signals which improves access for pedestrians and people with disabilities.

The End Result
This project will improve the ride quality of the highway and extend the life of the roadway. It also will reduce the need for emergency closures and costly repairs.
Sidewalk ramps within the project area will be upgraded to current ADA standards.

Project Benefits

  • Preserves infrastructure and extends the life of the highway.
  • Reduces the need for costly emergency maintenance repairs and unexpected closures.
  • This project improves access for pedestrians and people with disabilities.
