Project Facts
  • Improves safety and provides a measure of congestion relief.
  • The project realigns the ramps and eliminates one current signal, improving overall operation, efficiency and safety.
  • The legislature appropriated $2.97 million to design and construct the ramp improvements.

Project Status

November 2008

Read this week's construction activity and traffic impacts report.

This project is now under construction.

The construction contract was awarded to Icon Materials in June 2008.

Why is WSDOT realigning this ramp?
This project realigns the on- and off-ramps at the half diamond SR 167/SR 161 (Meridian North) interchange located in north Pierce County. The objective of this project is to enhance safety in this identified high accident location by improving traffic flow efficiency.

The End Result
When the project is finished, the eastbound on-ramp and the westbound off-ramp will be re-aligned to connect into Meridian North at one location to realize the efficiency benefits similar to a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI). By creating this half SPUI, the project will:

  • Realign the ramps to allow for wider turn movements, increasing the flow of turning traffic
  • Eliminate one of the signals for left turn movements, increasing the efficiency of the Valley Avenue/SR 167/Levee Road intersection
  • Increase storage for left and right turning traffic on the SR 167 off-ramp reducing backups to allow free right turns onto SR 161

Project Benefits

  • Safety. This project improves traffic flow and operation efficiency, reducing the risk of collisions.
  • Congestion. Re-aligned ramps and ugraded traffic signal systems reduces congestion.

What is the project timeline?
Project design is complete. Construction is scheduled for summer 2008.
