SR 161 - Jovita Blvd. to S. 360th St.- Widen - Complete July 2006

Overview
WSDOT widened State Route 161 (Enchanted Parkway) to four lanes from Milton Way in Milton to South 360th Street in Federal Way.

We also added a two-way left-turn lane, sidewalks and a bike lane in the commercial area from Military Road to Milton Way. Improvements in the residential area north of Military Road include an eight-foot-wide raised median and eight-foot-wide shoulders for bikes and pedestrians.

WSDOT and contractor Tri State Construction completed the project six months ahead of schedule and $1 million under budget.

How You Benefit
Cross GlyphImproves Safety
New medians, shoulders, and turn lanes reduce the risk of collisions.  Bike lanes and sidewalks help keep cyclists and pedestrians safe.
Car GlyphRelieves Congestion
The wider highway and turn lanes at intersections improve traffic flow and reduce commute times.
Leaf Glyph Protects Environment
We designed this project with the goal of minimizing effects on the environment. Protections include detention ponds and grassy ditches to store and treat highway runoff, maintaining natural drainage patterns and maintaining most vegetative buffers around wetlands.

Partnerships & Cooperation
On this project we consulted with the Muckleshoot, Puyallup, Yakima, Samish, and Kikiallus Tribes. We conducted a cultural resource survey, which determined the project did not affect historic properties, and sent the survey to each tribe for comments. Following a 30-day comment period, we forwarded the survey to the state historic preservation officer, who concurred with the survey's finding.
