Why is WSDOT
building a new interchange?
The new interchange improves safety. The intersection of Burley Olalla Road and SR 16 is the last remaining at-grade intersection on SR 16 between Tacoma and Gorst with traffic that crosses the median.
Historically, at-grade intersections on high-volume, high-speed highways such as SR 16 have high occurrences of collisions. The intersection of Burley Olalla Road and SR 16 is no exception. The intersection has been classified as a high accident location (HAL).
The End Result
Two new bridge structures will carry SR 16 traffic over Burley Olalla Road. New on- and off-ramps will provide complete access between Burley Olalla Road and SR 16.
Project Benefits
This project improves safety by replacing the existing at-grade intersection of Burley Olalla Road and SR 16 with a grade-separated tight-diamond interchange.
What is the project timeline?
Ceccanti, Inc., began construction in late July 2008 and the project is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2009. The original schedule pointed to a fall 2010 completion, but contractor Ceccanti, Inc. of Tacoma worked with the WSDOT project team to rearrange the order of work and shave nearly a year off the construction schedule.
