SR 153 - Methow River Bridges - Structural Rehabilitation

Project news

Summer 2018

  • Construction on phase one ran from August to Thanksgiving, 2017.
  • Phase two will run from June to October, 2018.
  • Crews are working Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. installing concrete collars on deteriorating bridge columns.
  • At any of the three bridges between Methow and Carlton, expect occasional 10 minute delays with flaggers when needed.
  • Phase three is scheduled for the summer of 2019.

This P2 Structures Preservation project initially retrofitted deteriorating bridge columns under four bridges over the Methow River on SR 153 between Methow and Carlton -MP 13.45-18.91 - in phase one. Phase two rehabilitates three more.

Why is WSDOT rehabilitating these bridges?
The project is to preserve the structural integrity of the supporting columns holding up the seven bridges on State Route 153 in Okanogan County.

Columns under these bridges have delaminated, the concrete has weakend, show spalls with exposed rebar and/or have vertical hairline and narrow cracks.

Phase one retrofitted bridges #153/13, #15, #16, & #17 and phase two retrofits #10, #14 & #20 by adding concrete collars as well as additional concrete repairs on the columns and horizontal struts between them.

The End Result
Preservation of the structural integrity of Bridges #153/10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 20.

Project Benefits

  • Stronger bridge structures less likely to suffer catastrophic failure from earthquakes and high volume river flow events.
  • Reduced maintenance costs.

What is the project timeline?
Phase one started August 7, 2017 and was complete in November.

Phase two starts in June and should be complete in October.
