SR 153 - Methow River Bridges - Structural Rehabilitation

November 2017

  • Construction began Thursday August 17th and should be complete by Thanksgiving.
  • Crews are working Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. installing concrete collars on deteriorating bridge columns.
  • Expect some occasional 10 minute delays with flaggers when needed at any of the four bridges between Methow and Carlton.

This P2 Structures Preservation project initially retrofits deteriorating bridge columns under four bridges over the Methow River on SR 153 between Methow and Carlton -MP 13.45-18.91 - in phase one. Phase two will rehabilitate three more.

Why is WSDOT rehabilitating these bridges?
Phase one is designed to preserve the structural integrity of four bridges on State Route 153 in Okanogan County.

Existing concrete columns for these bridges have delaminated throughout the height of the column, consist of weak concrete, show spalls with exposed rebar and/or have vertical hairline and narrow cracks in need of rehabilitation.

Phase one retrofits bridges #153/13, 15, 16, & 17 by adding concrete collars as well as additional concrete repairs on the columns and horizontal struts between them.

The End Result
When both phases are complete: Preservation of the structural integrity of Bridges #153/10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 20 by repairing the deficient concrete columns.

Project Benefits

  • Stronger bridge structures less likely to suffer catastrophic failure from earthquakes and high river volume events.
  • Reduced ongoing maintenance costs.

What is the project timeline?
Phase one started August 7, 2017 and should be complete in November.
