Pontoon Assembly, Outfitting and Testing in Seattle

These photos will take you through assembly, outfitting and testing of the 17 pontoons for the new east-half of the Hood Canal Bridge. See what it takes to assemble pontoons, build superstructure and build road deck as crews build the surface on top of the pontoons that drivers will travel across.

Pontoons R, S and T Retrofit
January - September 2007

In January 2007, three connected pontoons used in the west-half replacement were towed out of Port Gamble Bay where they had been moored since the 1980s and brought to Terminal 91, where they will be outfitted with new columns and roadway. First, the old road deck and columns were removed. Next, columns, crossbeams, girders and road deck are built on top of the pontoons. Find out more about pontoons R, S and T.

Pontoon Assembly
July 2007 - December 2008

All 17 pontoons will be assembled into three large sections before being towed to the bridge site for installation in May-June 2009. They will receive road deck and the draw span will be tested to ensure that it is operational before being installed in the bridge.
